All the pattern here is in the texture rather than the colour. Cream crewel-work is chain-stitched across a natural linen-toned ground in scrolling vines, flowerheads and paisley curls, with a soft fringed edge running right around the border. Tonal embroidery like this reads as quiet from across the room and detailed up close, which is why it works on a sofa you already have a lot going on with.
