How to Choose Cushion Covers That Actually Last

What actually determines whether a cushion cover lasts — fabric weight, seam construction, zip quality and care. A practical buying guide from House of Dudley.

Cushion covers are one of the easiest things to buy badly. They look appealing online, arrive looking exactly as pictured, and then within a few months they are pilling, the seams are pulling, the colour has faded in the sun, or the zip has given up entirely. A cushion that doesn't last isn't just a waste of money — it is a small daily disappointment every time you sit down.

Here is what actually determines whether a cushion cover lasts, and what to look for before you buy.

Fabric weight matters more than fabric type

It is tempting to think “linen good, polyester bad” — but the reality is more nuanced. A heavyweight, tightly woven polyester-linen blend will often outlast a lightweight, loosely woven pure linen. What matters most is the weight and density of the weave, not just the fibre content.

Hold a cushion cover up to the light. If you can see through the weave easily, it is lightweight and will show wear faster — particularly pilling and pulling at stress points like corners and seams. A denser weave that blocks most light is a much stronger long-term choice.

Check the seams and the zip

This is the part most people skip, and it is the part that actually determines longevity. Run your fingers along the seams — they should feel flat and even, not puckered or loose. A French seam or a flat-felled seam (where the raw edges are enclosed) will last considerably longer than a simple overlocked seam, which can fray with repeated washing.

The zip matters more than people realise. A metal zip will almost always outlast a plastic one, particularly with repeated use. Check that the zip is fully concealed rather than sitting against your skin or the upholstery — exposed zips wear the surrounding fabric faster.

Velvet: what to know before you buy

Velvet cushions are having a significant moment, and for good reason — the texture and depth of colour is unmatched. But not all velvet is equal. Crushed velvet shows wear patterns faster than a smooth, dense pile velvet. Cotton velvet is more durable than viscose velvet, which can flatten and lose its lustre with use.

If you are buying velvet for a high-use piece like a sofa cushion, look for cotton or cotton-blend velvet with a dense, even pile. Save viscose velvet for lower-traffic pieces like a bedroom armchair or a decorative cushion that won't be handled daily.

Colour and sun exposure

Almost any fabric will fade with prolonged direct sun exposure, but some hold colour considerably better than others. Solution-dyed fabrics (where the colour is added during fibre production rather than after weaving) resist fading far better than standard dyed fabrics. This is worth asking about specifically if you are styling a sunroom, a north-facing living room, or anywhere that gets consistent direct light.

In the absence of solution-dyed options, choosing deeper, more saturated colours over pale or pastel tones will generally show fading less obviously over time.

Caring for cushion covers properly

Even a well-made cushion cover will wear faster with poor care. A few habits make a meaningful difference: rotate cushions regularly so wear and fading is even rather than concentrated on one side. Fluff and reshape inserts weekly to prevent permanent flattening. Spot clean rather than fully washing where possible — repeated machine washing is one of the fastest ways to break down fibres and fade colour, even on covers labelled machine washable.

What we look for at House of Dudley

Every cushion cover we stock is chosen with longevity in mind alongside design. We favour tightly woven linens and cottons, cotton-based velvets, concealed metal zips, and construction that holds up to genuine daily use — not just a single photograph. Our range spans bold botanicals, classic stripes, considered velvets and the kind of near-plains that anchor a room for years rather than a season.
